
ANDRÉ FRANÇOIS (1915-2004)
Born André FARKAS in Timisoara (Ungary, later Rumania), André François attended the Art Acade my in Budapest before moving to Paris where he became pupil of the famous poster artist CASSANDRE. He became French citizen in 1939 and settled with his British wife and his two children in the country, near Paris-
In 1949 he began a long collaboration with Punch, Lilliput and shortly after that with Graphis in Szwitzerland.
As one can see from the list of his exhibitions and publications below, André François was one of the most successful graphic artists of his time. In 2002 André François’ studio burns to the ground in the night of December 7th to 8th. His lifework is almost completely destroyed (actually the only pieces that have escaped destruction were the works in private collections and at Bartsch & Chariau.
