Charles Martin (1884-1934)

Born in Montpellier, Charles Martin belonged to the team of talented Frenchmen that Condé Nast was able to win for his Vogue from LaGazette. The designer and illustrator attended the art academies of Montpellier and Paris, as well as the Académie Jullian and is perhaps most noted for his drawings depicting the extravagance of haute couture with a touch of irony. Beside contributing to Vogue, his works were later also seen in Femina, Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. In addition he also illustrated numerous books and established himself designing posters, stage sets and costumes, furniture, wallpaper, fashion, fabrics and perfume bottles.
