Ruben Alterio,
born 1949 in Buenos Aires, finished his art studies there before moving to Paris in 1976. Two years later he exhibited his pictures for the first time to a large audience. Since 1980 he has been working regularly as a freelance illustrator for Marie-Claire, Mirabella and La Mode en peinture, etc. His style, influenced by Velasquez, Goya and Delacroix, and his technique, oil on paper, is more of an artist than an illustrator. Similar to Toulouse-Lautrec he achieves a certain transparency and weightlessness by frequent use of turpentine. He continually plays with the effects of light and shadows - the famous sol y ambre of Spanish painting – which he varies with virtuosity. His work is remarkable for its emotional intensity, the drama of light and the wealth of color nuances. He draws his inspiration from the Parisian street life, from theater and music.
