Gerd Grimm (1911-1998),

born in Karlsruhe, is the only German illustrator to have reached international recognition. After many years studying at the art academies in Karlsruhe and Berlin, he began his career in the late 1920s with advertising work for Reemtsma before joining the journal Die Dame in Berlin. Throughout the Nazi régime, Grimm who was half jewish had to hide and managed to publish some drawings under the name of his later wife. In 1950 Grimm emigrated to the USA. The time he spent in Berlin in the 1920s and later in New York emphasized his empathy for metropolitan life . His fashion illustrations are contrasts to his city pictures: here luxury, beauty, style, there vitality, humanity but also endless indifference. Often the sketching element of his drawing style is combined with an artistic freedom, that impresses with dramatic color and unusual perspectives.
